Community Science

Help us build our database

We rely on our wonderful volunteers to process our camera trap images into useable data. Each photo taken by our camera traps must be examined in order to identify any animals present, as well as potential disturbances or other notable circumstances. Photo tagging can be done from any computer, and familiarity with Missouri wildlife is preferred, but not necessary. If you would like to join our efforts, please contact our Community Science Coordinator at stlwildlifeproject@gmail.com

iNaturalist Project

iNaturalist is a website and mobile app that houses a biodiversity database built through community science. Individuals across the globe upload observations of living organisms, which are identified by the iNaturalist community’s experts. Through iNaturalist, community members provide useful data to researchers striving to answer questions about biodiversity, species distributions, and more.

Making and uploading observations in the St. Louis metro area is an excellent way to contribute to the region’s biodiversity inventory, complementing the data collected by the St. Louis Wildlife Project. All you have to do is download the iNaturalist app, take pictures of wildlife you see within our study area, and upload! You can find us on iNaturalist here, or by searching “STL Wildlife Project.”
